Twenty-two medical professionals and students from around the world, including personnel from University of San Diego, Children’s Hospital Oakland and AmeriCares, spent eight days working at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) in Mbarara this summer.
Our team brought 1,000 pounds of supplies to HICH: IVs, medications, suture supplies, oxygen tubing/masks/CPAP devices, stethoscopes and more. They established a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Ward II to help severely ill newborns being transferred to HICH from a local government hospital. During the trip alone seven newborns were treated and saved who would have died if the NICU had not been operational.
