Medical Mission Brings Training, Treatment to Children of Mbarara

Twenty-two medical professionals and students from around the world, including personnel from University of San Diego, Children’s Hospital Oakland and AmeriCares, spent eight days working at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) in Mbarara this summer.

Our team brought 1,000 pounds of supplies to HICH: IVs, medications, suture supplies, oxygen tubing/masks/CPAP devices, stethoscopes and more. They established a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Ward II to help severely ill newborns being transferred to HICH from a local government hospital. During the trip alone seven newborns were treated and saved who would have died if the NICU had not been operational.

Medical & Teaching Mission Helps Hospital, Mbarara Community

A team of 20 volunteers traveled to Mbarara, Uganda in January to work at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) and in the community of Mbarara in an effort to help improve the health of the people living in Mbarara District. The team was comprised of 11 nursing students from Dominican University of California and three of their nursing professors including Anita Hunter, PhD, RN who is Dean of Nursing and a HICH Board member; one lawyer working with domestic violence issues in Uganda; two chemistry professors from the University of San Diego and three USD chemistry undergraduate students working on water quality issues in the Mbarara region. USD Grads Return from 8-Month Internship in Mbarara

USD grads Annie O’Brien, Brian Cervenka and Connor Johnson returned in May from a life-changing eight-month internship in Mbarara, Uganda. Annie, Brian and Connor gave their time, energy and compassion to the Mbarara community – and the children of Mbarara are immeasurably better for it.

MSc. is a consultant based in Belfast, Northern Ireland with over 34 years’ experience including expertise in the administration of third-world health facilities. In January, 2009, Eleanor travelled to Mbarara and generously volunteered her time to Holy Innocents to help finalize the configuration of the hospital and advise on hiring and logistical issues. Holy Innocents teams in Mbarara and San Diego alike found her advice and experience to be invaluable. The quality and effectiveness of the hospital have been improved thanks to her contribution.

Archbishop Thanks Holy Innocents & Supporters

Ugandan Archbishop Paul Bakyenga came to San Diego to thank HI volunteers and supporters for helping fulfill his dream of building the first dedicated children’s hospital in Uganda. In late 2006 Archbishop Paul asked for help building this hospital. The Archdiocese already operates two general hospitals and 18 clinics, but lacked resources to build a new hospital for children. Holy Innocents (a San Diego-based non-profit) was formed in early 2007 to answer Archbishop Paul’s request. Today Phase 1 of Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital is under construction in Mbarara, Uganda, thanks to the local San Diego community, service organizations, children’s foundations, faith-based organizations and supporters from all over the world.
