January 2013 Medical & Teaching Mission Helps Hospital, Mbarara Community

A team of 20 volunteers traveled to Mbarara, Uganda in January to work at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) and in the community of Mbarara in an effort to help improve the health of the people living in Mbarara District. The team was

comprised of 11 nursing students from Dominican University of California and three of their nursing professors including Anita Hunter, PhD, RN who is Dean of Nursing and a HICH Board member; one lawyer working with domestic violence issues in Uganda; two chemistry professors from the University of San Diego and three USD chemistry undergraduate students working on  water quality issues in the Mbarara region. The team was in country from January 5 through January 19, 2013 and accomplished the following:

·         Spent one week in the community of Kibona conducting environmental and patient assessments to ascertain what health problems were being exhibited secondary to the environment, especially contaminated water, poor hygiene, inadequate malaria prevention, and cultural practices that contribute to severe health problems in the children cared for at HICH. Trained the Ugandan nurses how to perform a community assessment and physical assessments to determine health problems.

·         Collaborated with the Ugandan nurses from HICH to present a Health Fair to the community to help them create a more hygienic environment, protect their children from malaria, prepare clean water, and take better care of themselves.

·         Worked with the community to develop programs to protect women and children from domestic violence; to care for the abandoned women and disabled children; and to care for home-bound elders.

·         Completed 15 home visits to provide care to home-bound patients (children and elders) and those recently discharged from HICH who had fragile health problems.

·         Worked in the hospital with the Ugandan nurses and doctors and provided an in-service educational program.

Our sincere thanks to the volunteers and team leader Dr. Anita Hunter!

Festo's Story...

This is the story of Festo, a 10-year old boy from Mbarara District. Festo lived alone with his mother – his father and two brothers had already died from malaria. To his mother’s great concern, Festo too began showing signs of malaria – fever, dizziness, vomiting. Hs mother treated him for four days with chloroquine tablets from a local pharmacy. When he didn’t improve, she switched to herbal remedies. Festo continued to worsen for another 10 days, and eventually fell into a coma. His mother panicked, and (more…)

Holiday Appeal Supports Hospital

Our Fourth Annual Holiday Appeal raised nearly $29,000 for Holy Innocents - thanks to all who participated!  A portion of the funds raised are earmarked for construction of a surgical center.  We expect to fully fund the surgery center by late 2013 and begin construction in 2014.  If you are interested in supporting the surgery center, contact info@holyinnocentsuganda.org.

Jump for Joy...

Baby Joy (left) came to Holy Innocents in mid-2010 as a critically ill infant.  Our medical team gave her the same high level of care that we give all children, and Baby Joy recovered completely.  Her father wrote us, “I really thank God for the work you are doing on the lives of our children in Uganda….  My Baby Joy got enough care from this hospital and now she is well
since July.”  Recently we received another message: “I hope you remember us. I am Joy's father and i wanted to tell you that she is doing well and these days she has started to take some stapes [steps] in walking…. So we thank God for you and we pray that He bless you because your team saved Joy.” Thanks to all our supporters who help save children like Baby Joy!

Medical Mission Brings Training, Treatment to Children of Mbarara

Oct. 2010 - Twenty-two medical professionals and students from around the world, including personnel from University of San Diego, Children’s Hospital Oakland and AmeriCares, spent eight days working at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital (HICH) in Mbarara this summer.

Our team brought 1,000 pounds of supplies to HICH: IVs, medications, suture supplies, oxygen tubing/masks/CPAP devices, stethoscopes and more.  They established a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Ward II to help severely ill newborns being transferred to HICH from a local government hospital.  During the trip alone seven newborns were treated and saved who would have died if the NICU had not been operational.  (read more...)
